Specials at St. Michael Catholic School


In addition to core academics, St. Michael students benefit from a rich variety of special classes designed to educate the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. From PreK through Grade 8, these classes provide opportunities for students to explore creativity, movement, culture, and digital literacy.

Physical Education (P.E.)


All students in PreK–Grade 8 participate in P.E. classes twice a week in our gymnasium. The program focuses on physical fitness, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a fun, active environment. Students learn lifelong skills to support health and wellness.

Music
 

  • PreK students attend music class twice a week, while Kindergarten–Grade 7 attend once weekly.
  • Music instruction is held in a dedicated music classroom and includes rhythm, movement, singing, and performance preparation.
  • Elementary students participate in musical performances throughout the year, showcasing their growth and building confidence on stage.
  • Instrumental highlights by grade:
    • Grade 3 – Ukulele
    • Grade 4 – Recorder
    • Grade 5 – Guitar

Spanish


Spanish is taught to all students with increasing intensity by grade:

  • Elementary (PreK–Grade 5): Twice a week
  • Middle School (Grades 6–8): Three times a week
  • We are proud to have two dedicated Spanish teachers—one for elementary and one for middle school—ensuring age-appropriate instruction that builds toward fluency and cultural appreciation.

Art
 

  • All students attend Art once a week in a vibrant and well-equipped art room.
  • Older students have access to a cutting-edge Art Studio, complete with a 3D printer and digital tools to bring their creative visions to life.
  • Art projects often integrate concepts from math and science, encouraging students to think creatively and critically.
     

Media & Technology


The Media, Information, and Technology Center is a cornerstone of the St. Michael School community, located on the lower floor and open daily from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Media:

  • Students visit the Media Center regularly for both library circulation and media instruction.
  • Lessons focus on how to locate, evaluate, and use information resources effectively.
  • The program is fully integrated with classroom curriculum, with collaboration between media and classroom teachers providing meaningful, point-of-need instruction.
  • Access the StMS Media Center Catalog.

Technology:

  • Kindergarten–Grade 6 attend weekly technology classes, where they learn key applications, functionality, and digital citizenship—navigating the digital world safely and ethically.
  • Grades 7–8 may take computer programming or STEM electives, expanding their tech knowledge in preparation for high school and beyond.
  • 1:1 Technology access:
    • PreK–Kindergarten: iPads for online learning apps and i-Ready
    • Grades 1–5: Touchscreen Chromebooks (in-school use only)
    • Grades 6–8: Touchscreen Chromebooks (used at school and home)
